Australis Canoes are practically maintenance free—one of the key reasons they're a favorite among hire operators. With aluminium supports and moulded plastic seats, there's no wood to rot from weather exposure. The most you'll ever need to do (if you feel like it) is hose out any sand or mud after use.
While we’re aware that some people have taken canoes onto the ocean, Australis Canoes strongly advises against it. Canoe hulls are not designed to handle ocean waves or swell and may tip over in such conditions. If you plan to paddle in the ocean, we recommend using a sit-on-top kayak or a purpose-built sea kayak, as both are specifically designed for stability and performance in rougher waters.
The easiest and most secure way to transport a canoe on your car is to place it upside-down directly onto standard roof racks. Tying it down on the flat of the gunnels provides better stability and security than using cradles.
Australis Canoes recommends not exceeding a 2.5Hp petrol motor or a 28–36 pound electric motor when fitting a motor to either the Bushranger or Swagman canoes.
While not mandatory, we highly recommend adding an outrigger kit when using a motor on your canoe to ensure maximum stability and safety.
How far and how fast you want to paddle will determine the best kayak for you. Generally, longer kayaks are better for covering greater distances, while narrower kayaks offer greater speed. Both length and width come with their own advantages and trade-offs to consider.
As a general rule, plastic kayaks can be transported upside-down directly on roof racks without the need for cradles, which helps protect the hull’s shape. However, kayak cradles can be beneficial in certain situations. If you prefer to carry your kayak right-side up, cradles provide better support. Additionally, J-shaped cradles are helpful when transporting two kayaks that are too wide for your roof racks, allowing one or both to be carried on their sides.
